The Beginner's Guide to Early Björk

Most everyone will recognize Björk's distinctive wail when they hear it, but what most don't know is that she has been recording that wail for more than 30 years. This compilation follows Björk's early years, beginning with her debut as a young Icelandic pop star, rocking through her raging teenage punk years, and ending up with a wonderful jazz album that should be 100x longer than it is.
There's a lot missing from this compilation, unfortunately. But this is simply because there are no known recordings from many of her early projects, including Spit and Snot, Exodus, Cactus, Stigrim, Rokka Rokka Drum, and Hljómsveit Konráðs B. One project, The Elgar Sisters, has some extant recordings - a few tracks can be found on the excellent 5-disc 'Family Tree' compilation album.
You get two tracks from every album. I've kept the tags intact except for the track numbers so you know the source. Enjoy!
Early Solo - Melodious and Saccharine Sweet
Björk [1977] Released when she was 11 years old. Juvenilia at its best. Sung in Icelandic of course...
01 Arabadrengurinn
02 Fusi Hreindyr
Tappi Tíkarrass - Early 80s Icelandic Punk-Pop
Bítið Fast í Vítið [1982] Translated as "Take a Firm Bite of Hell", this is as punk as Björk ever got. It's also the first time we hear her sing in English.
03 Ottar
04 London
Miranda [1983] Poppier, almost disco-like melodies appear, but punk undertones seep through.
05 Beri-Beri
06 Get Ekki Sofið
KUKL - Icelandic Anarcho-Punk
The Eye [1984] This album is all over the place, but it's pure gold from start to finish. Enter Einar Örn Benediktsson, who sticks around to be witty (and often obnoxious) in The Sugarcubes
07 The Spire
08 Dismembered
Holidays In Europe (The Naughty Nought) [1986] Skipping KUKL's impossible-to-find live album brings us to this noisy, scratchy, distorted gem of pure aural experimentation.
09 Gibraltar (Copy The Neighbour)
10 Holland (Latent)
The Sugarcubes - Alternative Pop Rock, 80s Style
Life's Too Good [1988] The most playful album from the Sugarcubes, and one of the best from Björk's whole discography. It deserves 3 tracks. This is where Björk's vocal potential begins to shine.
11 Birthday
12 Deus
13 F***ing In Rhythm And Sorrow
Here Today, Tomorrow Next Week! [1989] What can I say - more Sugarcubes! Einar moans a lot in this one.
14 Nail
15 Planet
Stick Around For Joy [1992] This clean and poppy album is actually kind of boring. The track 'Hit' reached #17 on the UK singles chart.
16 Hit
17 Walkabout
Björk Guðmundsdóttir & tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar - Bebop Jazz!
Gling-Gló [1990] In the middle of her Sugarcubes days, Björk got together with an Icelandic jazz trio to record this fantastic album. Both tracks here are covers of well-known tunes (in Icelandic), but there are originals in there as well.
18 Ég Veit Ei Hvað Skal Segja
19 Bella Símamæ
And that brings us up to Debut, which is Björk's "first" album, released in 1993. If you like what you hear, let me know. I have all of these albums
Please note that I transcoded all tracks to V2 VBR for the sake of keeping the download size smaller!
