They were great German directors, but it stayed a bit individual fame. It wasn't like a strong German movement (Like in the 20s). They did eventually become famous outside Germany, and that's where they stayed mostly.
It's like when Fritz Lang went to the US, at the time of the Nazis. He then filmed
M which can be considered one of his best, but that didn't do any good to the German scene.
Now in Germany, there's some kind of a Boom since the late 90s. At least that's what they themselves have found, and that's what they're hoping for.
