absolutely agree 100%.
it seems to be a common idea for young musicians to view being in a band as some sort of extra exclusive family unit. it's not. the sooner everyone gets over that the sooner things go smoother. there's nothing wrong with playing in multiple bands, and there's nothing wrong with being more dedicated to one project over the other - just be honest with everyone involved.
also, just because you're in one group with specific people does NOT mean they'll necessarily be willing to follow you into a different type of group (i've literally spent every other meeting with a drummer trying to get him to understand this - for the last 10 years...)
in short, don't treat your band like a girlfriend.
