i'm a fan of playing along to music that doesn't specifically feature the instrument i'm playing. it's tougher with bass but if you can find something heavy on the jazzy piano side of things the bass might be so hidden that you could add your own distinct line over the piece. it's a way to build up improvisational skills without simply imitating what's already there.
