Deathspell Omega -
Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice (2004)
I never thought i'd properly enjoy a black metal album but, y'know what, i was wrong. Amazing guitar work, about as far removed as you can get from thrash-derived cliche. The mixing and ambience (best word i can muster) of the album is something to behold, and the end product really is unsettling primarily because it doesn't summon the image of greasy-haired misanthropes in smelly leather trenchcoats. From the tracks i have heard so far they make atmospheric use of sampling, reverse guitar, sound effects (the low fidelity tape noise that Burial is a fan of) and a wall-of-sound style production that is quite Biblical in its scope.
