I think that Dave Gilmour once decribed it well... basically he said that The Floyd really weren't the very best musicians in their feild but what they did do was gel what they did together well when playing.... Mason's drumming was succint, and entirely suited to the music, it was precise, not virtuoso, but it fit the songs just perfectly and tastefully, as did Gilmours own guitar work....
