For the record I'm an agnostic, but I lean towards deism, I have had more than a few experiences that leads me to ponder that there is an afterlife. But I don't think any religion has a real understanding of what it is.

Unless you believe in reincarnation, you obviously weren't alive before you were born, so no, it's not the same thing, now we're talking about having experienced life already, and upon death your conciousness shutting down forever.

You can sugarcoat it or try to comfort people like me as much as you can, you will fail, it's f*cking terrifying. And I honesty don't know how any sane person could think otherwise.
