One thing that helps (sometimes) is to just get an instrument (any type is fine), and just start messing around with it. It can be kinda discouraging at first, but after awhile, it can produce a real drive to learn.
There are a ton of good books out there teaching how to play instruments. For me, I learned guitar first (self-taught from a book), went on to keyboard, bass, etc. Once you get one instrument down, its alot easier to learn new ones. They all have alot in common and you can apply the same techniques to all.
I would recommend getting a guitar (acoustic is cheaper, but electric is more fun), a good rhythm guitar book that teaches chords and basic music theory, and just sit down and start at it. Your fingers will hurt, you will sound like crap, and you will get discouraged, but keep pressing on. Before you know it, your friends will be like "Wow man, you are great on guitar! You wrote that song?". Just takes alot of work.
Hope this helps in some way!
