Hi, Scottsy,
I had never heard of Augie March, so I read the full lyrics and listened to "Owen's Lament," as I was curious what sort of song would appeal to someone who, like I, loves the word "scooch."

"Owen's Lament" is quite a sad song! A man who went off to war imagines his beloved moving on with her life and remembering him through children she has (even if they are not with him), yet eventually he takes the bullet (which served as his "engagement ring" with the woman he loved and had to leave) such that his corpse is returned home to her (or his mother...I wasn't sure).

I thought it was interesting (a paradox) that the man in the song wanted the woman he loved to just do a foxtrot with other men, and nothing more, whether they are "foxes" or not (cute line)...yet he also imagines her having a child with someone else and he feels as if he would still be the parent...as if his love for her means he would (wish to) share all her life experiences with her even if he couldn't be part of them due to his death.

I read online that many people like the poetry of Augie March songs and lyrics, which are very popular with Australians...even ones who live in Wisconsin, apparently!
