I completely understand using beat machines or psychedelic over-dubs in recording songs that will not be used in concert for artistic expression and exploration but keep the extra add-ons away from major songs. People want to see a band play live, they do not want to hear the album while the band holds instruments.

I don't really think it should matter. A recording and a live performance are two fairly different forms of artistic expression, they
should sound different from each other given the nature of the different situations in which they're produced.
