Some new stuff for me last week. I'll try to post this on the weekend each week rather than doing it during the following week.

maudlin of the Well

Thanks to Comus for introducing many of us to this album. I'd recently discovered Kayo Dot and have only listened to one album so far. So obviously motW was on my radar as well. Thanks to the free download, I've listened to this a couple of times and must say it's pretty damn good. Not quite a masterpiece yet, but very good. Here's one of the songs, for anyone interested in having a listen. I don't have a favorite yet so I just picked one at random to post.

Gentle Giant

I've known about these guys for a while and had checked out four of their albums prior to joining his board. Comus' recent thread, forcing prog down our throats, prompted me to listen to their 3 early albums that I'd yet to check out. I must say I was impressed and may even like them better than the next four that I'd already heard. I liked that they're a bit simpler and maybe less over the top. I've only played each of the first three albums once so far though, but I'm thankful for the prog forced down my throat.

mewithoutYou

These guys hooked me in with their tormented post-hardcore debut in 2002, a very dark album. Each album went a bit softer and more polished after that, which was fine after a bit of sinking in. Their latest album It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All a Dream! It's Alright came out last week and I have to say I'm quite disappointed. Gone are the tormented aggressive vocals, post-hardcore style, and lyrics left to the listener's interpretation, and instead we have fluffy indie campfire songs about god. These guys are a Christian band but I didn't realize that until after I got into them, and frankly you couldn't tell from their early stuff. Now I'm offended. I really highly recommend this band's first 3 albums, though.

Here's a comparison, first album (copy paste url), second album...fourth album. Honestly that last song is growing on me and isn't the best example of the newer stuff, but it's the only one on YouTube.

Uh, this won't display because there's a "bad word" in the URL. Come on, is that really a bad word?
[ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7VIG AyTH-8 ] <-- Copy and paste this, remove the space. This is the best representation of their early style.

Cabaret Voltaire

I've known of these guys for ages but only ever had two of their later albums. They were a huge influence on one of my favorite bands, Skinny Puppy. I took it upon myself recently to check out some of their earlier albums, and last week it was The Crackdown.

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.
