There's more than that; it's not a simple case of keeping "I'm g ay" quiet. As Choi points out you have to hide the fact you have a boyfriend, whereas heterosexuals can be as open as they want about their wives and girlfriends. It isn't fair in the slightest and Obama's pussying out shouldn't be excused.
