Yeah, I think that's the way to go - just find good places to live with good public trans. Also, I've been on this website for awhile called
CouchSurfing , and I recently found a thread on there especially for carpooling etc. At first I was kind of skeptical, but it's a decent community of wanderers and travelers who (mostly) want to help each other, including carpooling.
