The only reason people state that a religious book is open to interpretation is because they seek to sidestep an issue that does not sit well with their own more modern sense of morality. The meaning of the passages quoted is quite clear and is evidenced by the way society kept women "in their place".
What use is a religious book, especially one containing the supposed word of god, if mankind is able to pick and choose the bits it likes, interpret as it sees fit those parts it is uncomfortable with, and disregard the rest? At least fundamentalists are consistent.
It is often stated by people of religion that religion is the basis of human morality. It is my opinion that human morality has evolved despite religion.
