Older music has survived through the times much like the way older literature has, mostly by popularity. Notice that the more popular classic bands you see today were the ones that were popular back in the day. It's the same big ones, The Who, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. but you don't see a huge influx of younger people listening to some of the lesser known bands like Television or 13th Floor Elevators, that had a cult following when they were in their prime, still have now.
