I agree with you. Especially here in Texas people are really gun crazy. Like I said though...I pretty sure I could never shoot an animal or person and I would never own a gun (even though my husband does and I don't agree with it). ^Well, target practice is fun, I agree there .. I've only shot bolt-action rifles though, never handguns.
Up in the arctic, we're very careful with our rifles. If for some reason we think there might be bear around or we're going to sleep in a tent, we half-load (slide the bolt in but make sure the bullet doesn't go in the chamber) one or two depending on the size of the group. Half-loading is always done under supervision by others in the group, not just so that people don't accidentally walk around with a bullet in the chamber, but also so those without a weapon can trust that the rifle is half-loaded and not loaded.
Statistically, people with guns are much more dangerous than polar bears.
