1984 is one of my favorite books! The fact that the characters are, most certainly, somewhat flat not only allows a vaster population to identify with the character but also fits perfectly with the story. Of course the characters are flat; free thought is all but banned and personal expression is not allowed. How could anyone have any definitive characteristics in this situation? They don't think enough to understand who they really are.
Also, just started a book called This is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession. Looks to be a fascinating read so far.
