Hawkwind pioneered only one kind of space rock though. Hence, I will say to that bands such as the Ozric Tentacles, Gong, Hidria Spacefolk, Eloy and early Pink Floyd might suit your tastes better if you want to hear a more literal kind of "space" rock.

Speaking of which, today I got....

Pink Floyd - A Saucerful of Secrets

Read many a' good thing about this sophomore release, and oddly enough its the only album by them I hadn't heard before. Thus far, I'm convinced its one of the best albums I've ever heard.

Jan Dukes de Grey - Mice and Rats in the Loft

Obscure acid-folk in the vein of Comus arranged into prog-like suites? **** yeah!!!!
