I've heard Sonar is very good.
Soundforge is definately better for mixing, and Audacity is actually a very powerful tool to be free.
And I don't believe you can assign inputs from a recording mixer on Audacity.
There are some things that I can do with Audacity, that I can't figure out how to do with Cubase LE4. (Which, is a pretty expensive piece of software.)
