To show that you're still around, but you're musical quality has deteriorated so you have to lip sync? Also, I think music videos are different - they are more like visual stimulation to place with the recorded song. Live performances, be them in concerts or television shows or whatever, are supposed to be a showcasing of a bands
live talent and that's what makes live performances so special. That's why people go to see bands in concert, when they could just chuck on a music DVD instead, and why fans get disappointed when they find out they were lip syncing.
I dunno, I just don't think it's a very noble thing for a band to do, be them a new band or a old one. I guess it sucks if the producers insist on lip syncing, and it's ultimately not the band's decision, but I just don't approve of it.
