If you use that quote in context with WWII, then yeah, it does seem to lose it's validity. However, keep in mind that that song was referring to the Vietnam War, so when you refer the quote to that war, it does make a whole lot more sense.

I hate the way the government decided to burst in there even though the whole American public seem to detest it so much. Maybe its cos they lost. Not that theres any winners in war of course.
