I thought overlong guitar solos & high pitched vocals went out in the 80s.Doesn`t progressive mean progressing in your music rather than sounding like a relic from 20 years ago.

No. Obviously you are in the wrong board. Maybe even the wrong forum. And btw, if you actually took the time to listen to Dream Theater instead of going by what your other dork friend tell you, you'd realize that Dream Theater's music has changed quite a bit sense they started. And by your definition of Progressive Music, they would be classified as such.
