Queen were pompous which is why they were who they were and are legends in their own right. Everything they set out to do was on a grand scale to be bigger and better then any other act that was around at the time but they didn't do it in an irritating fashion (at least not to me) and Mercury 9 out of 10 backed it up and delivered amazing performances and vocals. Queen were also very good at not taking themselves too seriously at times... the "I want to break free" video should be enough proof of this. Lyrics like "We Are The Champions" could be argued to have been written with everybody, who is in the spotlight and determined to stay on top, in mind and not just about Queen. Mercury himself once said "We are the champions is a winners song" this could be applied to everybody.
