I think the term "hard rock" exists for a reason. Zeppelin did really heavy songs that certainly sound metal, like Communication Breakdown. But calling them metal is a serious example of pigeonholing. Zep were certainly an influence on metal, and though they were very intense and energetic they certainly weren't angry.

When you look at a lot of the hard rock bands who were an influnce on heavy metal other than Black Sabbath. Like Deep Purple, AC/DC, Queen, Uriah Heep, KISS, Blue Oyster Cult, Rush, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Budgie, Hawkwind, Aerosmith. These bands weren't really angry, just very heavy (for the time) and that just branched into what we now indentify as metal.
