nighpoet - my only comment would be that in reality, country or country & western really only developed utnil the mid 1900's. There were western balladers & yodelers, Irish music, christian gospel, blues & pre-bluegrass 'hillbilly' music that all coalesced in a similar fashion as rock & roll did a little bit later. Additionally, what we know today as country was heavily influenced by rockabilly, so in a sense rock music assisted with forging the modern country sound.
Not meaning any disrespect towards country music, but I wouldn't classify country music any different than rock music, though country & western does predate rock & roll by a decade.
