Nevertheless Nick Drake wouldn't be as popular as he is if he didn't die. As to whether he's overhyped... I can't tell. Most of the people who worship/rep him seem to be of the alt/indie crowd, and while I listen to a lot of alt rock, I don't talk to too many genuine alt/indie loving people. So I don't know if they overhype him.
Musicians tend to get hyped if they die, not just singer/songwriters. Dimebag? Kurt Cobain? And dude, Jack Johnson isn't dead.

Nick Drake didn't blow up after he died, Nick Drake didn't even get much notice until the whole indie-folk revival with stuff like Iron and Wine and Owen recently. If he hadn't died he'd probably have done a Vashti Bunyan and just have disappeared for a long time until and than come back start recording again when he actually had an audience. He'd be just as popular if he was still alive, he'd just have more material he might even be more popular.
