This was never intended as a childrens movie, it's an Imaginary world a child might inhabit growing up in these circumstances.
The violence in the film was what was going on in this time and to just gloss over it would be considered dishonest by DEL TORO.
By all means you don't have to like the film, but your review lacked intelligence.

correct, i wasn't reffering to the civil war as being anything bad, i simply thought the film got to preachy with messages instead of focusing on all the fun parts.
I came into the film expecting a adventourous kids fairy tale, and you certainly have to admit thats what it seems like judgin by the trailers and art for the movie. So i was dissapointed at what little mystical events happened.
But the more i think about it, i do have to give it credit for mixing two completely different worlds so well. and intertwining them like was done.
