I think their s/t was one of the strongest debuts around... I actually like The New York Dolls a lot. And Thunders was obviously very influencial on punk rock guitar. Not really being able to play and not giving a sh*t and still being able to make good music is what made them so endearing.

Like I said thats just one thing I look for in music. There are plenty of other things I look for , creativity , expressionism , cultural significance , artistic merit or whether it makes me want to laugh , cry or jump around the room like an idiot.It's all a part of the experience of feeling what music can give you not just sitting there thinking 'hmmmm nicely executed middle eight there' although if thats what gets you off then go for it.

What you don't understand is that I don't like Yes because of their technical abilities, since I can name a lot of more technical bands than them that I don't even like. I like them because their music
does mean something to me, I
do connect with it... Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman knowing how to craft great solos is just a bonus.
Its not quite the lyrical content, though I do like their lyrics, it can be just the music, Eric Satie and Miles Davis have made some emotional impact on me, they never needed vocals or lyrics.

Thats how I feel about them too, but if someone appreciates their music, then thats great. Just as long as they don't claim them to be the only great band in music, like Don did.

Take Primal Scream for example , they'll never win any awards for musicianship but you can just see their love of music in the influences & nods to many different genres throughout their career. Nobody else thought of mixing Rolling Stones riffs with Acid House beats or mixing bangra with techno & punk. Taking all those many influences and making it sound like a Primal Scream record is a skill in itself and just as important to how well someone can play a guitar if not moreso.

I think they're pretty talented actually, they're quite versatile. And versatility does take some talent.
