With regard tot he American gun laws, we've been moving in the direction of safe control with things like the Bradley bill and (until it was recently allowed to expire by W himself) the Anti-Auto Weapon law that was signed by Reagan, Carter, bush and Clinton.

The problem is two fold in this regard:

1. The states are highly decentralized, and most laws are state level when it comes to guns. Here in Ma our gun laws are so strict that our slogan (one of them) is "Massachusetts, you're more likely to live here." In the mountain regions, you have far more relaxed gun laws and this case is really the least of the problems. Far more people get short regularly on the inner city streets than they do on all the college campuses and in the suburbs.

2. The NRA (national Rifle Association) has more power in washington than any other lobbying group because they have the history where it counts, and thats in getting incumbents defeated. And to politicians, thats all that matters. If you're state is red, or purple, you stand a higher chance of needing the backing of the NRA or at least not their backing of your opponent.

As far as the mans writing goes (which I have no read) I can tell you that there is always one complete lack of talent in every writing workshop I've ever been in. I have to imagine this **** isn't so dissimilar to that of which I unfortunately was assigned.

For example: One time this kid in my glass wrote a story about him getting drunk, setting a bear trap in his front yard, catching a dog in in and poking it with a stick while it starved for a couple of days. Once it died he sawed off the daogs leg and used it to jerk himself off with.

And keep in mind this kid (mentioned above) didn't kill anyone. The writings (that have been read to me via the news) and his idiotic speech (which I was pleased to hear was openly mocked on drive-time radio today) are just more of this goth subculture that takes in willfully helpless losers who think their smarter and better than other people, they just don't apply themselves. Their worse than the "scumbags" they decry as worthless, and might I add, with all the references to rich kids, one commentator made a great point in saying that this kid first of all went to VT and secondly was having his education paid for.

When things like this happen I don't make a quick move to turn on the government, or gun control laws because frankly, these minority cases just sell more newspapers than people who go through life logically. There are a million other things that could have prevented this and they just didn't. No one is making a call for any reform to anything along the lines of awareness to mentally disturbed people, or more strict entrance requirements to writing classes [sic]. And you have to keep in mind that states rights are the way we weed things out. States that learn from this and adjust accordingly will prosper and those who don't will continue to encounter the same problems, but if your need to feel manly over the carcass of a dead deer is more important than 30 senseless deaths, well then maybe we'll find your kind being weeded out much faster than breeding patterns would have taken.
