Why is it better to clearly sound like your influences than it is to start moving away from them? I prefer Crooked Rain myself because of the playful experimentation involved and although CR, CR has their most sucessful song ("Cut Your Hair")
Slanted and Enchanted is the disc always touted by critics and mentioned when indie rock is the subject or a top albums list is being created. And I think since their commercial success was so limited, we might easily consider S & E their most successful album because of the mountains of acclaim it has recieved.
