Maybe it's because I heard them before all this "Nu-Rave" stuff was being tossed around, but I tend to consider them more of an Electro group. I mean, other than the occasional guitars, all they
make is dance music.
Now I'm not British, but as an outsider looking in, it's not like Britain was in dire need of a band like the Libertines. In fact, I actually think the British Indie scene was in better shape
before they came around. In popularity, sure, they're very important, but in terms of actual quality, talent, and range of influence, not really. The Libertines only really get the attention because at the time Britpop was still dying out, and despite basically just being a continuation of it (along with most popular British bands these days, IMHO), they seemed to be "new" and "exciting." Honestly, if it hadn't been for the so-called "Garage Rock Revival" going on the US and no new popular music genre forming in the UK, would the Libertines really be as big as they are?
