Obon is a cultural festival that takes on various forms depending on the region. The various froms I'm referring to is the dances as Obon (that goes by other names as well) means dance. It's part of the Higan holiday. This year I'm celebrating my obon with
Awa odori. A dance native to Tokushima even though I'm a Furiyitani native
Higan is the Buddhist holiday for honoring the dead and welcoming the back to this plane of existence for 2-3 days. Lots of cooking, candle lighting, lanterns floating in water and some other stuff.
Hatsumode is what I celebrated while most of you are celebrating Christmas, hannakah, Kwanzaa or whatever it is you celebrated during that time of year. It's a form of "new year's resolution" The idea is to go to a temple (sually) at the beginning of the year to promote good luck and prosperity. I don't know why, but Higan must be performed by January 5th. And I personally think it's rather hypocritical since most Buddhists are raised to believe that you do not to be in a spiritual place to do practice you faith. but yeah. whatever.
