he was swimming because they died in the sea. OR IN A BOAT WRECK! oooh thats a good twist.
so there was an accident, & he lost someone, swam back to shore & ordered a meal [as you do when you lose someone], only to realise that ;
1. it was their favourite meal,
2. it was them, cooked into a soup,
3. seagul soup kills delusions somehow, the guy realises HE killed them, & goes to top himself too.
