Hubert Selby Jr. ? Never heard of this writer before.

Understandable. Mo Deezy isn't a short walk in the park, that's for sure.
You've never heard of Hubert Selby Jr? His most famous work was probably Requiem for a Dream due to the movie adaptation. Excellent book - and possibly even more excellent movie. It follows the story of four people whose drug addiction brings them all to the absolute pits of personal despair - pretty sad stuff.
But I love his other works too - Last Exit to Brooklyn, The Room, and The Demon being my favorites. He's got an excellent and punchy writing style and his explorations of the frailities and shortcomings of the human psyche and condition are fascinating reads.
