Can't believe I'm saying this but... Norg's idea is a decent one. Not the taking pictures of the pages of the magazines he wants rather than buy them, but in general, music mags can be a good source of information on new music. If you're into metal, I guess Kerrang! is still the go-to, or maybe Metal Hammer, whereas for Prog it's, well, Prog Magazine (formerly Classic Rock Presents Prog) and then there's Classic Rock itself, and its various spinoffs (AOR, Pop etc) and no doubt plenty of other mags on other genres.

If you don't want to buy all those mags, a subscription to Readly is a possibly cheaper alternative, which will allow you to read all the mags they have in their catalogue, including most, if not all, of the above for about 9.99 a month. Given that most mags cost more than that for a single issue these days, not a bad deal. You can also at the moment get two months free - which I'm availing of right now - and then cancel if you wish.
