I come from a conservative family on a small island in Eastern Europe and didn't actually get a negative reaction from anyone, including my right wing catholic family.
I don't know if you're speaking about your personal situation but most people also tend to imagine much worse things happening than what actually ends up happening when they come out. I think it's not that common to have a violently negative reaction from your family members, they really have to be a little crazy to do that. And even for society at large, especially in the developed west, it's more common for people to keep their retrograde opinions to themselves.
It's also a matter of self-respect. People who choose to come out are normally tired of lying to others about who they are.
Just my experience of course.
