So happens that I am having Shepherd's Pie tonight, and I am planning to use ketchup.
I forget if it was Goofle11 or Urbs I was talking to about Shepherd's pie but he said that Shepherd's Pie isn't what Americans consider it - mash potatoes on ground beef. He said Shepherd's Pie is really mash potatoes on mutton. He called the US version Yeoman pie or Cottage pie or something like that. So it really isn't like pouring ketchup on mutton. :/
