I used to think it was mind numbing as well when I was younger. But if you've got friends or family who follow the sport, that's what makes it truly fun. At its base level, it's engaging in a kind of (mostly) harmless tribalism by proxy without any real danger or fear of reprisal. In our fake, vapid and plastic world - a lot of people, especially ones who don't enter the military, find this to be a useful outlet.

To me, it's always more interesting and engaging when you put money on the line - and with friends and family, it always provides someone bragging rights and an easy avenue for ****-talk. I've got multiple family members who I'll never let forget the fact that they bet on the Patriots against me when the Eagles won the Super Bowl - one of my family members had to buy me an Eagles Suepr Bowl t-shirt as a result of the bet. I wear it to every barbecue that I can.

I follow American football somewhat obsessively. On the other hand, baseball is visual nyquil to me.
