Emo - emotional, the fairly new genre of song that has mostly sound the same, but most have VERY good lyrics and nice to awesome singers. nearly all of the songs of this genre have a very depressed, "my life sucks so lets jump off this bridge" feel.
No its not, fairly new genre my ass, its been around since the 80s, and depressing? Nope, even if its typically poetic, confessional and sad a good amount of the songs have to do with the scene or political things. For instance Joshua Fit For Battle have a song called "12 Years Of Catholic Skool And This Is What I Learned" which attacks homophobia.

parading your hate justified by 2000 year old writings
by straight white males
which feed the opression the "sinful" are subjected to
dismissing equal rights as special rights
let a man love a man
let a woman love a woman

or how about Pg. 99's Punk Rock Is In The Wrong Hands?

I am a prisoner in a war of idiots. The stomping feet of waltzing hypocrites pave the way of a brave tomorrow. Choke the throat of passion and sorrow. Kill my drifting breeze of thought. I have been captured. I have been caught. I am a prisoner in a war of scowls, coughing youth from its bowels. I am doing fine. I am feeling well, deep inside my dark well cell

Obviously theres and I wanna jump off a bridge feel to it.

Emo is short for emotional/emotive hardcore. It comes from the 80s hardcore movement. It had passionate and really intense vocals and a more melodic delivery. Theres not alot of song structure and typically its very diverse in style going from whispering to screaming, which can also be said for the guitaring. That was kind of the style going on the in the 80s. Then came screamo in the 90s with harmonized, and faster guitars screaming vocals and more melodic breakdowns.

Emo/Screamo Bands: Circle Takes The Square, Indian Summer, Moss Icon, City Of Caterpillar, Ampere, Hot Cross, Dag Nasty, Orchid, Nation Of Ulysses, IWouldSetMyselfOnFireForYou
