Lockdown Mexico style: Mexican policing is a strange combination of macho brutality and incompetence: in one of my wittier moments, I told a newcomer that it a Mexican policeman is half Rambo, half Keystone Kop. But it does mean that early in life locals dis-abuse themselves of the fancy notions of "liberties" and "rights" that the Americans now protesting against lockdown are bleating about.
In addition to the "regular" lockdown rules, these provisions are now in force in my city:
> play areas in parks roped off
> no sale of alcohol, even from supermarkets
> face masks compulsory if you leave the house
> only one person per car, unless medical emergency, in which case the patient must be on the back seat
Mexicans won't demonstrate against any of this, but yesterday I saw plenty of breaches of the rules - a popular one being the "chin mask": you have a face mask, but you wear it under the chin until you see a policeman coming. Today I'll be emailing Dr. Fauci to find out if this effective in reducing the spread of cv.
