To clarify this further: it is very similar to being different from what is expected of your gender, which I'm familiar with (actually, that's just another way of going against 'society's' expectations of course).
If you're naturally a typical girl or boy, you don't feel any pressure to be that way, and people take it for granted. If you're not that way, you notice resistance from the world around you. Also, nobody directly tells you to be like that, it's more subtle: the culture you take in, the choices your role models make, girls/boys sections in shops, etc.
