Sure. But I think punk's are more widespread than say IDM. This is probably cause it's a genre (purposefully) built on a "stripped down" approach to rock music, which makes it easily replicateable. I would say the same thing for most genres of ambient.

They have their nuances, yeah. I just don't find the nuances enough to make me enjoy either of them, let alone hold one in higher esteem.
