There's not just one virus out there. They (scientists or whoever) pick a few they think might be the popular ones trending that year and make vaccines for them. The flu shot doesn't inoculate for all the different imaginable strands out there. It's almost like betting on horses. Just cause you lose on a horse you bet on doesn't mean someone else doesn't win. Same with the flu and the flu shot. They (scientists or whoever) are picking the horses for you, for everyone who gets the flu shot. They could be placing a lousy bet that year and whammo! you got the flu, because some other virus decides to pull in the finally stretch and wins the horse race.
