I think Oasis would sound more dated now than The Smiths would have 10 years ago or than The Smiths would sound now. Oasis mimicked classic rock with a huge, bombastic sound (I am a fan) + they left out all those long jam sessions mid-song. They wore their influences on their sleeves, while The Smiths created a sound. While Oasis may have encouraged many to pick up guitars, The Smiths influences can be heard in both Interpol and The Editors, and I'm sure countless others 10 years ago and now.
