There was a re-classification and
they (APA) brought different neurodevelopmental disorders reclassified them and placed under the umbrella of Austism spectrum disorder (ASD). I see what you are saying and it does follow that a broader definition would include more than a narrower definition. But even so, it does seem there is an increase. It something that goes beyond the problem of comparing stats of today than a few decades ago. There are some sources
e.g. the CDC that says there is an increase.
