I wasn't talking about fantasy that messes with tropes cause that's the same damn thing with a fresh coat of paint to convince fans and the author themselves that they're not just dealing in glorified Warhammer. There's actual fantasy that uses the supernatural in much the same way as sci fi to build a world based on concepts that are in service to the story and not just theater dressing passed down from one book to the next.
Unfortunately I'm drawing a blank at least on books whose titles I can remember since I haven't been reading fantasy in years and was reading the sword and sorcery variety for the most part. Google is also unhelpful since fantasy fans are by and large the same and I'm not sure how to narrow down the search without getting yet another "TOP 10 LIST OF THE BEST LOTR RIPOFFS!!!"
