I would argue ideas can get stale even within a single song. The first time I hear it it's a really cool riff, the second time it's great still, but after five minutes it's just another riff. Everything originally exciting about it was drained away by the repetition. And when it didn't even sound that great to my ears in the first place, it can even get a bit annoying. Keep in mind, there are ways of slightly changing a riff so that it stays interesting. Adding another layer of harmony or increasing volume or adding more instruments or taking away instruments. Unless the riff itself is really eerie and strange (such as the title track) tension doesn't mount but simply fizzles until it runs out.

SUGGEST ME AN ALBUM - I'm probably not going to listen to it but I will if you bother me enough.
