I took three years in High School. I could of (no, just joking) I could have taken a fourth year, but I was afraid I would fail. I only know basics. It's one of my regrets not becoming more advanced in the language.
Anything more advance I double check with Google or Bing translator. I knew about "Ihnen" but I google the phrase just in case (worried of certain Grammatik-Polizei) and ended up copying the erroneous "ihnen" anyway. I make more mistakes worrying about making mistakes. Now you know my secret,
ich bin müde.
edit: I not only check Google for German, but also English. I did this so often I was flagged as a bot. True story, no lie.
