Just skip to the chunin exam and go from there. I would say skip the 1st series entirely and jump to shippuden if you just want to see the bigger epic battles but the 1st series has a couple of those worth watching.
I'll try the Chunin exam since I hear so many good things, but if that's garbage then I'm skipping to Shippuden and chalking the entire original series to a loss.
