In an interesting occurrence of serendipity, it seems Louis Hayes has been drummer for, among others, Yusef Lateef, whose
Meditations is Occult's choice this round for the Album Club. However, I'm not good with drummers so if you're expecting me to enthuse about his technique, timing or skill, prepare to be disappointed. Nothing bad to say though; good stuff so far. The vocal track on “Song for My Father” takes me somewhat by surprise, but it's a really touching yet not mushy portrait of the singer's dad, and there are some nice horns and cool piano on show here. A jazz fan could obviously review this album better than me, and I do apologise to those who may rate this guy for my shortcomings in that department, but there's really not much I can say except this: it didn't bore me, it didn't hit me with the Horns of Violence, and I pretty much enjoyed it all the way through. If I had to describe this, I think I'd call it joyous jazz. Best I can do, guys.
